Presented by ex-top gear presenter James May along with Kate Humble and Ant Anstead, the show was broadcast live from the Mini car production plant in Oxfordshire where they discovered how the plant manufactures a thousand cars in a day.

The show follows the Mini’s journey to Southampton where NYK employee, Andy Terry, talks James May through the complexities of loading over 4000 vehicles on to the NYK operated Triton Leader and the stringent processes behind making this happen. BBC’s James May was clearly impressed with the scale of the shipping operation commenting on the programme , ‘’ these huge boxy ships eat up all the cars off the dockside, sets off around the world and regurgitates them all over the place in chunks, a bit like an owl, a very large owl over 12 storeys high.’’ Having never been on a sea voyage before James May then went on to say ‘I’ve become strangely attached to my one mini, wanting to stay with it and see where it goes.’’

“It was a great opportunity to show the public how new vehicles reach the worldwide market and in addition to meet and work with such an icon of the motor industry, James May” commented Andrew Terry, NYK RORO European Port Facility & Operational Quality Superintendent.

From October NYK have introduced their new monthly service to Port Canaveral, Florida, in order to load vehicles and heavy equipment to Central and South America. The first vessel to call directly at the Port was M/V Neptune Leader.

With the relatively short trucking distance between Port Canaveral and the numerous auto and heavy equipment auctions located in central Florida, NYK's service will provide area businesses with cost-effective options and positions us competitively with other Florida seaports,'' said Alberto Cabrera,  Port Canaveral's Senior Director of cargo business development.

Gary Hurley, vice president of sales for NYK's RORO Division added, ''NYK looks forward to adding Port Canaveral to its service loop to meet our customers growing demands.''

NYK has signed a joint-venture agreement with Intermodal S.A.* to establish NYK Auto Logistics Colombia S.A.S (NYKCOL), a logistics company for finished cars. On September 14, a signing ceremony was held at the NYK head office in Tokyo and attended by Intermodal CEO Bernd Haubold and NYK senior managing corporate officer Koichi Chikaraishi.

Finished car imports to Colombia from Mexico – a country which is growing as a production base for finished cars - is expected to increase. NYKCOL has teamed with terminal operator Puerto Bahia** to operate a finished-car logistics terminal that includes PDI*** at the port of Cartagena, which is located in the northern part of Colombia. This agreement with Intermodal S.A. will lead to NYKCOL expanding its services to include inland transport, storage, and PDI in response to expanding demand.

The NYK Group will continue to provide total logistics services that include inland logistics and sea transport by taking advantage of the creative solutions initiated in the company’s "More Than Shipping 2018" medium-term management plan to provide advanced automotive logistics services in Colombia where car sales growth is expected under stable economic growth.

* Intermodal S.A.: A member of the Navemar Group, NYK’s agency in Colombia, and provider of inland transportation and storage of containers.

** Puerto Bahia: A terminal operator — headquartered in Cartagena, Colombia — for finished cars at Cartagena port.

*** PDI (pre-delivery inspection): Services for finished vehicles – such as final inspections, repairs, and parts application – before delivery to car dealer.
