United European Car Carriers (UECC), which is jointly owned by NYK and Wallenius Lines, have signed an important deal to construct two 'dual-fuel' LNG RORO vessels which will showcase the latest pioneering design towards environmentally friendly ocean transportation.

The Vessels have been jointly developed by UECC, Wallenius Marine and NYK Technical Group, together with Kawasaki Heavy Industry in Japan and are due for delivery in the second half of 2016.

NYK's RORO Division have successfully secured their first contract with Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) for the shipment of vehicles from the Port of Southampton (UK) to Port Hueneme (US West Coast). The first shipment was loaded in January earlier this year and NYK will commit to a minimum of 2 sailings per month.

The trade lane to USA is a very important one for NYK and to receive this new contract is a significant achievement. Both NYK and JLR are looking forward to working together in the future to secure a valuable long term partnership.

JLR saw sales in North America climb 21% in 2013 which was second only to its biggest market in China and Asia Pacific which increased by 30% during the same period.

 

International Car Operators (ICO) Belgium, a subsidiary of NYK's RORO Division, has been awarded a deal with Nissan for an additional 95,000 vehicles being processed through the port of Zeebrugge. From February 2014 ICO will provide storage and Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI) services before the units are distributed to France and Benelux Region. NYK RORO are currently building four next generation car carriers which are due for completion in 2014 & 2015. These new Vessels will have a capacity for 7,000 vehicles (previously 6,500 maximum) and NYK will be the first Japanese Shipping Line to operate such large post Panamax Car Carriers.

These new RORO Vessels will also showcase the latest energy saving technologies, lowering the fuel cost per finished vehicle transported by roughly one third compared to present.

 Energy Saving Technologies:

  • Enlarging vessel design - 3 to 4m has been added to the traditional 32m width of the vessel
  • Air lubrication system - reducing friction between the hull and seawater by generating air bubbles at the bottom of the vessel.
  • Low friction hull coating
  • Hybrid turbocharger - new on-board electric supply system
  • Inverter control of cooling water pump
  • Water emulsion compatible boiler - water emulsion fuel is potentially high efficiency, saving on fuel consumption and C02 emissions.
